The Painted Years (with autographed exhibition leaflet) - Peter McIntyre
THE PAINTED YEARS
IN 1941, while the English-speaking world was still stunned by news of the fall of Crete, a series of paintings was reproduced in the New Zealand press and in the Illustrated London News that portrayed the historic battle in dramatic reality. The paintings were the work of the New Zea-land Official War Artist, Captain Peter McIntyre, but lately appointed to that position by General Freyberg.
Behind him lay a New Zealand boyhood, study at the Slade, travel on the Continent, work as an illustrator and artist in London, and enlistment and service as a gunner.
Ahead were the momentous desert battles of the New Zealand Division, a remarkable journey with the Long Range Desert Group, and the weary slog through Italy, from which campaigns came a flow of compelling war paintings.
War's end brought great changes to the artist who had painted a king, a pope, six generals, a hundred beautiful women, and a thousand scenes of war. Return to New Zealand after fifteen years' absence was like beginning life anew but, inevitably, adjustment followed and Peter McIntyre settled down, to marry and raise a family, to build his own home and to paint his own land.
1967 Edition
Dustcover Very good, minor knocks/tape repair. Pages Very Good, some very minor marks. Leaflet Excellent.
